Factors to be considered in Classification and Coding of Materials

  1. Range of items: The larger the range of items held in stock, the more complicated and effective the code needs to be.
  2. Staff competency: Will existing staff be able to cope with the new system or will they need training, which will cost money?
  3. Available resources: What resources are available in terms of computers, time for training, location of training sessions etc.
  4. Needs of other departments: The needs of other departments, particularly production, accounts and purchasing, will have to be taken into account to determine which coding system suits them best.
