There are three categories of packaging:

• Primary: This is used to preserve the original product from environmental influences e.g. a bottle of soda. Packaging the consumer takes home.
• Secondary: Combines several primary packages e.g. a crate of soda bottles. Anything used to group items together such as boxes, trays, film wrap; in other words, the packaging around your packaging.
• Tertiary: Shipping package: This combines several secondary packages for transportation and storage e.g. a dozen crates of soda. Packaging used for transporting and warehousing, such as cartons and pallets
